North Cyprus has two mobile service operators, namely KKTCell (Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell) which everyone calls Turkcell which is actually the parent company based in Turkey.

Both companies can offer competitive service rates, with GPRS, 3G as well as standard tariffs available.  It’s who you prefer really, although KKTCell does seem to have a hold on the market at present.  They both also offer your itemised billing via email, and have English speaking staff at their offices which are in all major towns and villages and even in some supermarkets.  Staff can assist you with any problems that you may have with a phone or help you configure your phone for any number of applications and services.

Both companies operate on GSM, 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 which most modern day mobile phones seem to be configured for (unless you still own a brick that is!), so you should have no problems in North Cyprus.  If you want to use your UK number whilst you are holidaying here, then KKTCell and Telsim both have agreements in place with all major worldwide networks, so you should not have a problem connecting to their networks on your arrival.

Roaming fees however can be very high at times, so if you are planning on staying in North Cyprus for long periods, then you are much better off buying a pay as you go sim card from either operator, or purchasing a new mobile with the sim card, or getting your current mobile ‘unlocked’ to enable an additional operator other than your current UK or other network.

KKTCells and Telsims’ websites are KKTCell (which does have an English version) and KKTC Telsim (only in Turkish currently).

With regards to the communication super-highway, it feels like North Cyprus has jumped miles ahead in a very short space of time!

Just a few years ago we were all using dial-up connections, waiting an age for our computers to connect us to the rest of the world, and just generally feeling frustrated at the time it took to do anything remotely web based.  However, things have really taken off here, and North Cyprus is now firmly ahead of other countries in terms of the multitude of internet connectivity options available to us.  Whatever your requirements, from home use to business on the move to office networking, there is a solution available, and for those of us who use Skype on a regular basis, the faster options are perfect!

Below are the options available as we write, although don’t be surprised if something bigger and better comes along in the next year or so!

Dial-Up:

Dial-up’s great if you do nothing more than send and receive the odd email or two with friends and family.  You can get speeds of around 41kbps, but this is entirely dependent on how many people are using the service at any one time, and dial-up is not great if you want to download or upload files as it can be time consuming.  Packages are available from lots of providers in the major towns, and they can normally offer you a 6 month or yearly subscription.

ADSL:

This is a pretty new service in North Cyprus, having been offered since 2006, and it uses telephone lines (copper ones!), but it is much faster than conventional dial-up, plus you can use your telephone at the same time as surfing the net!  Various packages and speeds are available to you, so look around, and be aware of any extra charges, as you may have a monthly usage charge as well as a charge to the TRNC’s telecoms office too.

Wireless Broadband:

This option has again only really been around in the last few years, and has opened up the communications base in North Cyprus, especially for companies who need a networking solution.  For personal use it’s great if you prefer not to have the restriction of being in one place in your home when you work.  All the kit that’s usually required is either a small dish or box on your roof with one central cable that’s plugged into a router and you’re away!  Speeds from 128kbps up to 2048kbps are achievable, and there are loads of Internet Service Providers offering this service now.  The only problem here is which provider to choose!  There are some very reputable companies around, such as Arı Net : http://www.canon-cyprus.com/, The Internet Club -  http://www.the-internet-club.net/, Sunny Cyprus – http://www.sunnycyprus.net/en/index.html and Extend – http://www.extendbroadband.com/.  All offer a myriad of packages, including shared lines, dedicated lines and various speed options.  We could go on!  These are just a few providers and it’s a very competitive market, so take recommendations and shop around to see who might be offering some freebies to entice you!

Hot Spots:

This is a term given to a service provided by some of the ISPs, which entitles anyone to connect to a ‘Wi-Fi Hot Spot’ found in any given area.  These are great options for cafes, bars and hotels to have available for customers as a free service, to encourage you to pop in and have cake and tea whilst surfing the web!  The only trouble is you most certainly need a laptop, internet friendly phone or palm pilot to make use of the service!  You can also pick up this service in lots of other places such as larger apartment building complexes like Patara City in Kyrenia, and its useful if you don’t have a phone line and don’t want to fork out for a broadband package of your own.  But, you to have to pay a fee, and prices can vary but around 3ytl (approx. £1.20) per hour is fairly normal, and you pay direct via your device.  However, the service is only offered by a few providers at present, but if you can find a Hot Spot it could prove a great option for users who only need access for an hour or two at a time.

3G:

We have saved the best for last! 3G is now being offered by both the mobile operators Turkcell and Telsim as of late 2008, and it’s a super fast option in either 4GB or limitless speeds!  The kit you need is just a usb connection that holds its own sim card that you plug into your computer and that is it.  No messy cables or routers, BUT the only downside, it’s not wireless and therefore can only work directly with one device at a time.  With prices starting at 60ytl (approx. £24) per month, and available either on a pay as you go, monthly or yearly basis, this has got to be a very viable option for many.  Maybe it’s too early to tell whether this is the new phenomenon on the market, as there have been some teething troubles with some areas experiencing connection outages, but so far reports are generally good!

These days in North Cyprus you can have pretty much anything you like in the way of television, ranging from local channels to satellite packages.

There are local channels which can be viewed via a small ariel installation such as BRT 1, 2 and 3, part of the Bayrak International Group of media companies, which broadcasts English speaking programmes.

There are plenty of choices on the satellite side of things, one of which is Digiturk.  You can choose from a standard package which includes movie channels, sport channels, news channels and drama channels, to which you can add more sports, movie and comedy channels for an extra fee each month.  At the time of writing a basic family package is around 40ytl but prices do change, and you will need to rent the satellite box at a one-off cost of around 75ytl, and you would need to return this box if you ever cancelled the service.

All you do to get connected is pop to Digiturk’s offices or a branch of electrical retailer Tektan, located around the island in main town centres, to organise an installation which usually only takes a few days.  You can then pay upfront for either 6 months or a year, or pay monthly – whichever suits you.  The installer will take your credit card details in case you miss a payment though!  They also now have a website for North Cyprus – Digiturk Kıbrıs.

Other television options are Showtime, which offers a subscription package which includes movies, sports & general entertainment.  This will set you back around £550 a year and installation and equipment costs on top of that.  You can also have a box which can be used to connect via the internet, such a service is usually on a pay per view basis, but most certainly you will need a good internet package to ensure quality of connection.  You can also check through Cyprus Today as there are more and more companies offering satellite services with UK channels springing up all the time.

Finally, you might not be aware that you can sign up to watch TV, including your favourite soaps, on the internet for free!  www.uknova.com and www.thebox.bz – these are both what we guess you would call ‘file sharing’ – both services offer free downloads upon registration, featuring programmes donated by users, so if you need to catch up with Eastenders or Corrie then you are sure to find them here!  Again, you will need a very stable internet connection as the downloads can be pretty big.

There are even further options, some of which may be deemed to be unethical or even illegal, but we think we have mentioned enough to give you a good idea of what’s available on the television front!  Whatever your requirements are just make sure you do your homework, as installation costs can vary from free to £500 and sometimes more.

Here in North Cyprus you can choose from various radio stations to suit your tastes.  Bayrak International (formerly BRT), was formed in 1963 and broadcasts on 87.8/105FM and is one of the favourites here. 

Bayrak also has other stations such as Bayrak Classic on 93.4/88.4FM and Bayrak FM on 98.1/92.1FM.  You may also be able to pick up Radio 1 which is on 90.6/102FM, but we have never been able to get it! Another radio station Ada Radio broadcasts in Turkish, English and Russian on 93.8/ 96.2FM and they also have a website  Ada TV and TV station which you can find via Turksat.

There are modern dance music stations such as Dance FM broadcasting on 95FM, and Kral on 107FM.  Most of the major universities also have their own radio stations, such as the Eastern Mediterranean University’s radio station which you can tune into online at http://ww3.emu.edu.tr/, or Near East University on 88FM which broadcasts a mix of Turkish and English pop, blues, jazz classics and country music

However, satellite radio stations are also available through your television these days, and there are plenty of them to try.  You can also listen to UK stations through your computer should you have a good connection, which is convenient if you’re working and fancy some Drive Time news and views!  In addition you can also try the BBC World Service which is broadcast on 1340MW, but signal strength can sometimes be quite poor depending on your location.

Newspapers

The longstanding Cyprus Today publication is most people’s favourite here in North Cyprus, and they also have a subscription mailing service for those who like to receive the paper in their native country if they are not yet permanent residents in TRNC.  You can contact the newspaper by emailing cyprustoday@yahoo.com.  Formed in 1991 this newspaper has been the mainstay for many expats.  The paper has feature articles, local news, a leisure section, industry contributor features, which most of the time are really quite invaluable, and much more!  It’s available every Saturday for 2ytl in shops and supermarkets.

The other weekly newspaper is the Cyprus Star, again available on a Friday, and via their website subscription service, Cyprus Star . This full online version used to be free, but they have had to change to a charged subscription service so as not to discriminate against the paying readers.  It now apparently costs around £52 for a yearly sub, which is quite expensive, but you also get the Turkish Star with that as well!  However, you can view the front page free after you register with them.  All that said it’s a pretty good read, with its offerings fairly similar to the other two.

There are also lots of Turkish language newspapers as well, obviously, but as we are assuming that the majority of readership for About North Cyprus.com is English speaking, we will refrain from detailing these for you!  Suffice to say, there are plenty to choose from, all seemingly veering towards one political persuasion or another!

Magazines

The English language magazine market features a variety of colourful monthly publications which are normally free!  There are some tourism based magazines available as well such as North Cyprus Magazine, which always has some very interesting articles, and also the Tourism Monthly magazine published by the Northern Cyprus Hoteliers’ Association.  This has informative articles on hotels and people in North Cyprus for example.  Then you have the fairly new Living Magazine run by Tom Roche and his team which you can also see an abbreviated version of online at www.livingmagazinecyprus.com – this magazine takes a lighter and more entertaining look at life in North Cyprus.

Internet Based

You can also choose to access your media via the internet these days – as you well know if you’re reading this!  There are many websites offering general news from North Cyprus.  Bayrak International, the biggest radio and television broadcaster in North Cyprus has an English website version for example Bayrak International which is definitely worth checking out, or put ‘north cyprus news’ into your search engine and you will have a whole heap of websites to sift through.  One such informative site is the government’s Public Information Office which has a Latest News section which you can find at TRNC Info, this is quite useful if you want to have an official account of a particular subject, although the information provided is limited.

You can connect to the two mobile networks that are available in North Cyprus as both have agreements with worldwide networks to facilitate roaming connections, and each operator has offices located in cities and major towns.  Internet cafes are available in most major towns and villages as well, thus enabling you to keep in touch.  Some restaurants and cafes also have a wi-fi facility available for customer use too, which means that communication in Northern  Cyprus is easy!

North Cyprus also has a traditional land-line telephone system, and most hotels have a telephone for guest use in their bedrooms, and there are also public telephone booths located in town and village centres.  Supermarkets and local telephone offices sell phone cards for public telephones if you don’t have a mobile phone.

The traditional postal system in North Cyprus is much like what you would find anywhere in the world, with post offices located in most towns and villages, where you can send anything from a letter to a large parcel.  If anything urgent occurs which needs your attention and requires an overseas courier, then there are two international companies which have offices in the capital city of Lefkoşa.

The media industry in North Cyprus is varied, with a variety of newspapers and magazines to choose from, and the island even has its own news agency called TAK.  Bear in mind that newspapers do tend to have a certain political affiliation in North Cyprus.  Foreign language media is also available, with local weekly newspapers available, as well as European newspapers and magazines available to purchase in most major supermarkets and newsagents.

 If you don’t want to be entirely television or radio free whilst staying in North Cyprus, then there is plenty of choice available.  North Cyprus’s TV and radio network is wide and varied with the biggest broadcaster being BRT International, a broadcasting network which also includes three radio stations.  More than likely you will have a TV in your hotel room which will have a range of Turkish and foreign language channels, but there are also bars and pubs that show many worldwide sporting events, if you can’t bear to be away from football during your stay for example!  Foreign language radio stations are not so widespread, but BRT does broadcast its news section in English, German, Turkish and Greek.

North Cyprus has all the normal utility services you would expect, such as modern banking facilities all with cash withdrawal machines, mains water in most areas, electric and its associated power station plants, as well as a gas supply service – although gas is not yet available on a mains supply basis.
