Folk dancing has very deep roots here in North Cyprus and in fact, across Cyprus as a whole. The rich history of this island means that its culture and arts such dancing have been influenced by many centuries and the traditions of the latter are being kept alive and well with folk dancing displays being given to the pubic on a regular basis. Attend any of the yearly festivals and you will no doubt be treated to a wonderful example of traditional dancing.

What with the world’s current financial ‘crisis’ and the wobbly euro, North Cyprus might just be the perfect place to come for your holidays this year. For savvy holidaymakers eager to make the most of their precious pounds, it is definitely a place well worth considering.
For those of you who don’t know, North Cyprus is not part of the eurozone (yet!), even though it’s just a short hop from most European countries which use the euro as their currency – therefore it’s not suffering the same problems as other typical holiday destinations such as Spain, which are caught up with bad exchange rates and rising prices. You will find that prices are always quoted in pounds sterling here in North Cyprus, so people who are looking for holidays that can be bought and paid for in their own currency could benefit and get a much better deal for their money.

If you suffer from a physical disability and are living in or visiting North Cyprus you may notice that there is a distinct lack of facilities for you, and that your trips to town may be more than problematic. Things are changing, albeit extremely slowly, but some property developers are taking note of this when designing communal developments for example.
The yearly arrival in North Cyprus of the turtle population brings about hectic activity by marine groups, volunteers and the general public! Beaches all over the island are cleared and made ready for female turtles which come to nest all across the shores of North Cyprus.
When travelling to North Cyprus the majority of nationalities only need be concerned with having a current passport that has at least 6 months validity remaining. Citizens of all EU countries together with Australia, Canada, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore and Switzerland do not require a visa prior to travelling. Other nationalities should check with their local embassy office, or indeed visit the offices of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) if they happen to have a representative in your native country.
In 2005 the central bank and the government in Turkey knocked off a handful of zeros from their currency and today the currency in both Northern Cyprus and Turkey is the yeni, (new), Turkish lira. Exchange rates fluctuate, but on the whole the currency is now very stable. The yeni/new part of the currency’s name is to be removed in 2009, ending the novelty completely, but we thought we’d keep it for posterity!
